Zimbabwe Takes Bold Steps to Curb Road Carnage

By Dumisani Ndlovu

In a bid to tackle the alarming rate of road accidents, the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Transport and Infrastructural Development is intensifying efforts to find solutions.

Recently, the committee received oral evidence from key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development, Vehicle Inspection Department (VID), and Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe.

At the forefront of this initiative is the Director of VID, Mr. Sango, who presented the committee with innovative strategies to reduce road accidents.

One such initiative is the implementation of Statutory Instrument (SI) 118 of 2023, which mandates the installation of speed limiting and monitoring devices in all public service vehicles.

This legislative measure aims to enforce speed compliance among drivers of public service vehicles, a major contributor to road fatalities.

By capping the maximum speed at 100km/hour, speed limiting devices significantly reduce the likelihood of accidents.

This proactive approach demonstrates the government’s commitment to ensuring road safety and reducing the number of lives lost on Zimbabwe’s roads.

The VID’s efforts are part of a broader strategy to address the root causes of road accidents. By working together with stakeholders, the government hopes to create a safer and more responsible driving culture in Zimbabwe.

As the country continues to grapple with the challenges of road safety, the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee’s efforts serve as a beacon of hope. With persistence and collaboration, Zimbabwe can reduce road carnage and create a better future for its citizens.
