As road accidents soar

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has issued a stern warning to motorists in the Midlands Province, following two road accidents that claimed one life and left 15 others injured in Gokwe South and Kwekwe on December 23, 2024.
“We will be firm on the ground, patrolling and enforcing the law during and beyond this festive season,” said Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, ZRP Midlands Police Spokesperson.
The first incident occurred when a Toyota GD6 double cab motor vehicle collided with a Honda Fit that made a sudden U-turn on the Kwekwe-Gokwe road to pick up a passenger.
Fortunately, the driver and passenger of the Toyota escaped unhurt, while the passenger of the Honda Fit, Tendai Kwangwari, was hospitalized with injuries while the driver fled the scene of the accident.
In the second incident, a Mazda truck carrying 13 passengers veered off the road and overturned, resulting in one fatality.
The driver, Siphaphi Munetsi, is facing culpable homicide charges, police said.
Following the truck accident, police also advised car owners to ensure their vehicles are serviced and in good condition.
“We take this opportunity to urge all motorists to service their vehicles before taking them on the roads and further urge them to desist from overloading,” said Inspector Mahoko.
“Passengers are also advised to ensure their safety by warning drivers in the event of overloading and dangerous driving.”
Police has urged motorists to exercise caution and responsibility on the roads to prevent further accidents and loss of life.
