Zimbabwe Former White Farm Owners Compensation Start

By Kwedu News

Zimbabwe’s government will begin disbursing funds to compensate white former commercial farmers affected by the land reform program next month.

This development is part of the country’s arrears clearance plan after the early 2000 land reform program.

Swiss Ambassador, Stéphane Rey, revealed the development and praised the government’s efforts, saying it was a historic development and bold step towards reconciliation.

About 17 Swiss farms were validated for compensation, with 10 more under review.

The compensation plan aims to settle US$3.5 billion in debts to former farm owners.

Additionally, Zimbabwe has partnered with the African Development Bank to fast-track payments.

Ambassador Rey also highlighted Switzerland’s humanitarian efforts in Zimbabwe, including a $16 million drought insurance payout and $2.7 million contribution to the Zimbabwe Humanitarian Appeal.

Other initiatives include the $2 million Swiss arts and culture program, empowering local artists, and the revitalized Swiss Zimbabwe Business Chamber for private sector collaboration.
