The Zimbabwe government through the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development (MoLAFWRD) has installed solar boreholes and established nutritional gardens for rural communities in Zvishavane under Chief Mapanzure in the Midlands Province.

As part of its rural industrialisation and transformation, the MoLAFWRD has drilled 11 boreholes equipped with solar systems and in some established two hectare nutritional gardens, or village business units.

The Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution in the Midlands Province, Honourable Owen Ncube, speaking during a recent tour of some of the solarised boreholes in the district said such developmental projects dignify and empower rural communities in line with government policies and vision.

“Soon, these communities will also have access to clean water and the opportunity to grow their own nutritious food.

“… as we witness the remarkable progress we have made in advancing our nation towards the achievement of a prosperous and empowered upper middle income society earlier than 2030.

“The drilling and equipping of these boreholes, along with the establishment of business units are part of Government’s comprehensive programs aimed at climate proofing agriculture with a national target to drill 35 000 boreholes in all villages,” he said.

“The impact of these boreholes and nutritional gardens extends beyond the provision of clean water and fresh produce.

“They signify hope, dignity and empowerment of our rural communities.

“Access to clean water is a fundamental human right, and by providing it, we are improving the health, hygiene and overall well being of our communities in line with the health for all by 2025 policy,” Hon. Ncube said.

Some of the already completed solarised boreholes include those at Mahleka, Ngwaro, Torwoodlee and Maromo villages.

The boreholes have each been complemented by two hectare plots for horticultural projects.

Hon. Ncube also said work to establish more such units is underway.

“… the establishment of other units at Muzvondiwa, Shauke, Mavhute, (and) Vurayayi are at an advanced stage,” he said.

Meanwhile, as part of the broader rural industrialisation 8.0 model, government is revitalising and resuscitating irrigation schemes, dams, implementing Presidential Poultry programmes, Pfumvudza, among several others.
