Kabete urges youths to be innovative

Leben Panashe Kabete, a poet and a fashion designer based in Gweru has encouraged young people to be innovative and creative.

Kabete said the youth peak bulge has not spared Zimbabwe, as last year’ statistics results has proven that 67.7% of the national population are the youths and like many other young people in Africa, Zimbabwean youths have been challenged by the predicament of high unemployment rates causing high economic downfall, so he encouraged young people to be innovative and to use their talents to create employment for themselves.

In an interview with this publication Kabete said he has ventured into fashion designing as a way of making a living whereas poetry is more of a way of expression and hobby .
He said fashion designing was always a thing for him, when he was young he used to pimp his own clothes in various ways because he is from a poor background where his parents would only afford to buy him one outfit for church and being someone who was talented in fashion designing he would use his talent to pimb some old clothes so that he would look great and by doing so he discovered himself and started to use his talent to earn a living.

“I would be creative with clothes in so many ways so as to fit the status of my peers that’s how it all started, right now it’s still the same narrative but l’m now making money from fashion designing,”said Kabete

Kabete said he is a poet and a student at midlands state university but he is doing fashion designing as a way of making money and he has a dream to build one of the biggest fashion houses in Zimbabwe though his business is still small .

He urged young people to focus on their goals and do what they are good at because some of them are shy to start their own projects because of criticism from the society.

“Young people should focus on their goals and do whatever they are good at ,some youths are shy to start their own projects because of criticism from the society ,well it is hard to start your own project especially when its like mine , fashion designing industry which is perceived to be for females specifically if you sew the clothes yourself like I do , but if you focus on your goal everything will fall in place, some critics will be silenced when you start earning and actually doing productive things, some won’t ever be silenced but we move and we will always move no matter what people say ,”said Kabete
