Mkoba Women Fight NCDs Through Netball

Mkoba, Zimbabwe – In a bid to combat proliferating Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) and promote community empowerment, a group of women in Mkoba have created a local netball team.

Formed in 2022, the team, Amazing Talent Academy, consists of about 17 women, mostly housewives, from the local community in Mkoba ward 15 and 13, aiming to provide a platform for physical activity, socialization, and personal growth.

“Our team started as an initiative to keep mothers engaged and active, reducing the risk of diseases like hypertension and diabetes,” the team’s Manager, Tabeth Mpofu said.

“We’re proud to be making a difference, but we face significant challenges due to lack of funding and resources,” she added.

She said the team lacks essential equipment, funding, proper netballs and uniforms.

“If we could get at least four balls and three pairs of uniforms, it would be a huge boost,” Mpofu said.

The team also seeks funding when travelling to play with women from other areas like in Lower Gweru and Shurugwi.

“When travelling we need transport, food, water and drinks for at least 20 people, including technical staff, for the day during match days.

“We wish our team to play continuously but it’s a challenge since we don’t have resources to use,” Mpofu said.

Team Captain, Patricia Machayasikisi, emphasized the benefits of netball.

“It helps us maintain our physique and inspires us as a community. We gain respect as women in the area, and it’s an opportunity to bond and avoid unnecessary conflicts,” she said

Another player, Palmer Fungai, echoed the captain’s sentiments.

“Netball keeps us fit, empowers us as women, and prevents us from engaging in unhealthy habits.

“I was once a hypertension patient, but since joining the team, my blood pressure has normalized,” she said.

The team’s vision is to expand and engage more mothers, fostering a sense of community and cooperation.

Local Councilor, Norest Dzivakwe, who conceptualized the team, periodically provides personal assistance.

“We’re grateful for his support, but we need sustained resources to continue playing” Mpofu added.

Research shows that regular physical activity, such as playing netball, can significantly reduce the risk of NCDs like hypertension, diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular diseases and others.

The World Health Organization recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity exercise per week.
