Woman sells 2 day old baby in SA

A-23-year-old Zimbabwean woman has been found guilty of selling her two-day-old baby in South Africa in contravention of the Trafficking in Persons Act.

The woman, from Gokwe, pleaded guilty before the Harare Magistrate’s court.

The sale allegedly took place in 2023 in Johannesburg, South Africa, on the 26th of June where the woman initially claimed that her child died shortly after birth.

Investigations however revealed that she had conspired with another woman to sell the two day old baby.

It is said the accomplice smuggled the baby into Zimbabwe in October last year, but luck ran out after she was arrested on November 27 following a tip-off.

The baby was recovered and placed under the care of the Department of Social Welfare.

When the accused woman learned of her accomplice’s arrest, she returned home on December 12 to reclaim the baby, but her claim raised suspicions as she had previously declared the baby dead.

She was subsequently arrested and charged with trafficking her own child.
