Gweru, Zimbabwe – The Multi-Aid Support Organisation (MASO), a prominent humanitarian organization based in Gweru, has announced the election of veteran journalist and Editor-in-Chief of The Sun Newspaper, Willie Mponda, as its new chairperson. Mponda, who previously served as the organization’s vice chairperson, brings a wealth of experience and a clear vision for the future of MASO.
In his inaugural address, Mponda expressed his commitment to fostering unity and ensuring the organization’s continued relevance in addressing the evolving needs of the community. He emphasized the importance of teamwork and collaboration amongst board members, staff, and beneficiaries to achieve MASO’s goals.
“I believe that unity is paramount for any organization striving for success,” Mponda stated. “I am committed to promoting a cohesive environment where everyone feels valued and contributes their best. This collaborative spirit will be crucial as we navigate the challenges ahead and work towards making a tangible difference in the lives of those we serve.”
Mponda highlighted his intention to leverage his expertise in communication and leadership to drive innovation within MASO. He aims to strengthen existing partnerships, expand the organization’s reach to underserved communities, and enhance the overall impact of its programs.
“[My goal is] to use my expertise to drive innovation and ensure that the organization remains responsive to the evolving needs of its beneficiaries,” he explained. This forward-thinking approach signals a dynamic new chapter for MASO, one focused on adaptability and maximizing its effectiveness.
He also paid tribute to his predecessor, Victor Wasara, who served as chairperson for the past six years. Mponda acknowledged Wasara’s mentorship and the valuable lessons he learned during his tenure as vice chairperson, including the importance of good leadership. He assured the members that he would build upon the foundation laid by Wasara, incorporating new ideas and strategies to further strengthen MASO’s position in the community.
“I learnt a lot as a vice chairperson, he taught me to be a good leader. We will continue with new ideas as the executive,” Mponda said, acknowledging the continuity and evolution of leadership within the organization.
Mponda expressed his gratitude to the MASO membership for their confidence in his leadership abilities and pledged to serve the organization with dedication and integrity.
The newly elected board also includes Zivanai Matore as vice chairperson, Teresia Shumba as secretary, Innocent Maguta as vice secretary, Martha Ngwenya as treasurer, and Phanuel Banda and Kate Shumba as committee members. This diverse and experienced team will work alongside Mponda to guide MASO in its mission.
MASO’s Evolution and Vision
Formerly known as Midlands Aids Service Organisation, MASO underwent a rebranding in April of last year, changing its name to Multi-Aid Support Organisation. This strategic shift reflects the organization’s broadened scope, extending its services beyond HIV and AIDS to address a wider range of community needs.
Established in 1991 as a non-profit organization in Gweru, MASO is driven by a vision aimed at fostering community self-determination, unity, and progress. Its programs focus on providing essential healthcare services and support to vulnerable populations within the region.
According to local community development experts, Mponda’s election comes at a crucial time for MASO. As the organization seeks to expand its reach and address increasingly complex social challenges, his leadership skills and strategic vision will be invaluable.
“Willie Mponda brings a fresh perspective and a proven track record of leadership to MASO,” commented a local NGO representative who wished to remain anonymous. “His experience in the media and his understanding of community needs will undoubtedly contribute to the organization’s continued success.”
Residents of Gweru can expect to see a renewed emphasis on community engagement and innovative programming under Mponda’s leadership. MASO’s commitment to providing vital support services remains unwavering, and the organization is poised to continue making a significant positive impact on the lives of individuals and families throughout the Midlands province.
