Bulawayo, Zimbabwe – The US$4 million Ecobank Zimbabwe Limited heist suspects are still at large as police intensify efforts to bring them to book, Kwedu News can reveal

In a press statement on Friday, Ecobank officially confirmed the armed robbery at its Parkade Branch in Bulawayo on October 3, 2024 reassuring its customers that it won’t disrupt operations.

The incident occurred during a cash repatriation process by a local security company, Safeguard.

Initial reports and videos on social media say six suspects ambushed the cash-in-transit team at the corner of 9th Avenue and Fife Street, making off with approximately US$4.4 million in cash.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has launched an investigation, dismissing social media rumors that the perpetrators have been arrested.

“The ZRP is still conducting investigations in connection with the armed robbery incident which occurred in Bulawayo on 03/10/24 at a local financial institution.

“The Police dismiss social media messages indicating that the suspects have been arrested. The Police wilI certainly keep the public and media informed on the latest developments in relation to this case,” ZRP said

Ecobank Zimbabwe Managing Director and SADC Cluster Head, Moses Kurenjekwa, said the bank is concerned but the safety and security of staff and clients remain the bank’s top priority.

“We are deeply concerned about this event and are actively working with local law enforcement to ensure thorough investigations.

“The safety and security of our customers and staff remain our utmost priority. We therefore reassure you that we have taken immediate measures to enhance security and response protocols across all our branches,” he said.

“We understand that incidents of this nature may raise concerns among our customers regarding safety and security. We hereby reassure you that all necessary protocols are in place to protect your funds and personal information.

“We are committed to keeping you informed as more details on the incident become available,” Kurenjekwa added.

The ZRP indicated that the circumstances surrounding the heist suggest a possible inside job or significant information leak.

The ZRP has since appealed for calm and public cooperation as investigations continue.
