Two people attending a church service sustained minor bruises when a whirlwind blew the roofs off four classroom blocks at Muwunga Primary School in Gweru on Sunday.
The injured were immediately ferried to Gweru Provincial Hospital by a passerby Mr Jackos Manyanga.
Three of the classrooms were being used by grade 6s and one used by grade 3 pupils.
School Development Chairperson Obert Rupanga said the school was appealing for funds and materials from well-wishers to be able to repair the damaged buildings.
“Apart from destroying the structures the whirlwind came from nowhere and hit the school on Sunday afternoon, resulting in two people injured. Three classroom blocks belonging to grade 6 green, grade 6 orange and grade 6 red and a grade three classroom blocks had their roofs blown off,” Mr Rupanga said.
Addressing parents at an emergency meeting the School Head Mr Ignatio Sibanda said the Public Works department came and assessed the extent of the damage which he said amounted to US$2400.
“The affected grade 6 students should be preparing for their examination next year and we don’t want anything that negates the efforts being made to improve the pass rate,” he said.
One committee member who spoke on condition of anonymity said were happy that there were no serious injuries, and no school equipment was damaged although people are still in shock.
“We appeal to the Civil Protection Committee and well-wishers to help the school renovate the damaged classroom blocks so that lessons are not disturbed, “she said.
