Masvingo, Zimbabwe – Police in Masvingo have arrested two suspects for unlawful possession of 200 kilograms of dagga on Saturday.
Limbikani Mwanandi (36) and Speakmore Mhonda (39) were apprehended on March 8, 2025, at an open space near the intersection of Harare-Masvingo and Bulawayo-Masvingo Roads.
The suspects were caught transferring the contraband from a broken-down cross-border bus to a Nissan Caravan vehicle.
Zimbabwe Republic Police Spokesperson, Commissioner Nyathi, confirmed the arrests.
“The swift response by our officers demonstrates our commitment to combating drug trafficking in the country,” he said.
He further stressed the dangers posed by drug syndicates in Zimbabwe.
“Such quantities of drugs are not only a threat to public health but also to national security,” he said.
The arrest in Masvingo comes shortly after a separate operation in Harare on March 6, 2025, where police arrested three suspects, Petronella Masauso (36), Maryland Tarusarira (29) and Archford Mavhima (30), for unlawful possession dagga.
Authorities recovered 5.5 kilograms from the trio.
Commissioner Nyathi commended the officers involved in both operations, urging the public to assist in the fight against drugs.
“We call upon all citizens to report suspicious activities and cooperate with law enforcement to rid our communities of these harmful substances,” he said.
Police have intensified operations against drug-related crimes across the country as part of a broader strategy to curb rising cases of substance abuse.
Investigations into the sources of the confiscated drugs are ongoing, police said.
