Tragedy strikes as mentally challenged man stones two to death

Gokwe, Zimbabwe – In a chilling incident that has left the community reeling, a 35-year-old man suspected of having mental health issues brutally murdered two men with stones in broad daylight on July 17, 2024.
According to police reports, Shekem Muromo (58) and Bonface Gwatiringa (60) were fatally attacked by Obvious Ngwazani around 5 pm near Batanai Roman Catholic Church in Manoti, Gokwe. The victims had allegedly asked Ngwazani to put on a shirt, which seemingly triggered the violent outburst.
A Roman Catholic Priest witnessed the horrific scene and promptly alerted the authorities. The victims were pronounced dead at the scene and transported to Gokwe South District Hospital.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police have launched a full investigation into the double murder, and are urging the public to ensure that relatives with mental health conditions receive proper care and medication.
In the wake of this tragedy, the Provincial Community Relations Liaison Office, Emmanuel Mahoko is cautioning families to take responsibility for their loved ones’ mental health, stressing the importance of seeking professional help to prevent such devastating incidents.
This senseless act of violence has sent shockwaves through the community, leaving many in mourning and calling for greater support and resources for mental health care.
