Gweru- Seven people are feared dead, and several injured, in a road traffic accident which occurred yesterday early morning (December 8, 2024) along the Harare-Bulawayo highway.
The accident occurred at around 3:30 am near Dabuka, at the 330-kilometer peg.
Though the exact number of the injured is yet to be officially announced, sources say about 22 people have been hospitalized at the Gweru Provincial Hospital.
National Police Spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the fatal accident.
“Seven people were killed when an Inter Africa bus rammed onto the back of a stationary truck,” he said.
Bodies of the deceased were also taken to Gweru Provincial Hospital.
Commissioner Nyathi also took the opportunity to warn members of the public, especially communities along highways, against looting.
“…it is a serious criminal offence to take advantage of a road traffic accident and start to loot/steal goods from haulage trucks or vehicles and taking them to private homesteads for use, sale or any other purpose,” he said.
Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) in response to the accident, one Sango Mpanduki emphasized the importance of taking preventive measures to minimize accidents along highways.
“While accidents aren’t totally avoidable, we can minimise them by parking far from road edges.
“We can also increase the number of reflective tapes at the back of our truck. Further to this, our highway is in a deplorable state and requires immediate fixing,” he said.
