In a stranger than fiction incident, a heartless woman threw a freshly foetus, down through the window from one of the Midlands Hotel rooms.
When our news crew got to the scene, police had a torrid time dispersing members of the public who were jostling to catch a glimpse of the foetus.
One lady of the night who spoke to this reporter on condition of anonymity said, ”All I can say is that she is a fellow (commercial sex) worker who made the horrific cruel abortion choice due to reasons beyond her control”.
She however could not be convinced to shed more light on why the accused made such a bizarre decision.
Scores of people who spoke to this publication who expressed concern over the incident were quick to call for the closure of the hotel. The hotel is owned by former Gweru Mayor, Hamutendi Kombayi. In 2022; Midlands Hotel which at one time had the honour of being accorded three star status was turned into a brothel and sex haven mostly used by night ladies.
Zimbabwe Republic Police Provincial spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the incident.
“Zimbabwe Republic Police Midlands province has launched a man hunt for a suspect behind a case of concealment of birth which occurred at Midlands Hotel on 16 November 2023 at around 1200 hours,”he said.
He said a man who was on guard duties discovered a freshly dumped foetus while doing perimeter checks at Midlands hotel. It appeared to have had been thrown down through the window from one of the Midlands Hotel rooms, he added.
“ZRP Gweru Central attended the scene and preliminary investigations are pinpointing Theresa Augusto (NFPK) believed to be a sex worker. Augusto was last seen complaining of abdominal pains prior to the incident and also police recovered blood stained Sandles from the room she had been using. Efforts to locate Augusto are underway,” Insp. Mahoko said.
The foetus was taken to Gweru Provincial Hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem.
“We appeal for any information that may assist in the arrest of the suspect Theresa Augusto. We also warn would be offenders that concealment of birth of a child is a serious crime which carries a custodial sentence.
