Mvuma – Dinson Iron and Steel Company (DISCO) has achieved a significant milestone by commencing pig iron production, a crucial step towards achieving full production at its US$1.5 billion plant. This development marks a substantial advancement in Zimbabwe’s industrial revival and economic recovery. The successful initiation of pig iron production demonstrates the potential for substantial growth and development in the nation’s industrial landscape.
Dinson Iron and Steel Company (DISCO) has achieved a historic milestone, successfully producing its first batch of pig iron on June 12, 2024. This significant accomplishment marks the beginning of a new era in Zimbabwe’s industrial landscape. The company’s blast furnace has roared to life, paving the way for the production of steel billets and a diverse range of steel products, including pipes, bolts, nuts, and more.
As the project reaches its climax, a futuristic city will emerge, accommodating a population of approximately 30,000 individuals. This metropolis will boast a comprehensive array of services, including financial institutions, banks, recreational facilities, health services, and more.
DISCO’s steel plant, poised to become the largest in Africa, will undergo a phased production expansion. The initial phase will yield 600,000 metric tonnes of products, followed by 1.2 million tonnes in the second phase, 3.2 million tonnes in the third phase, and ultimately reaching a remarkable five million tonnes per year in the final phase. This monumental project is set to revolutionize Zimbabwe’s industrial sector and cement the country’s position as a significant player in the global steel industry.
