The Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) has been called upon to take a leading role in advancing modern communication technologies. This call came from a cabinet minister during a strategic plan review workshop held in Bulawayo on Wednesday.

Tatenda Mavetera, the Minister of Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services, emphasized the need for Zimbabwe to adapt to the rapid technological changes occurring globally.

“POTRAZ, as our experts, must anticipate new technologies and be agile enough to quickly propose appropriate policy frameworks for deployment of those technologies. In order to provide thought leadership in the ICT sector, Potraz must strengthen its Research and Development,” said Mavetera.

She highlighted that if POTRAZ lacks the internal capacity for research and development, it should seek partnerships with research institutions to utilize their facilities or conduct research on their behalf.

Mavetera also urged the telecoms regulator to enhance the operations of the Data Protection Authority, stressing the importance of clearly communicating the Cyber and Data Protection Act to the public.

“We need to promote a comprehensive understanding of the Data Protection Regulations currently in place and ensure compliance. Additionally, periodic reviews of the regulations are necessary to adapt to advancements in our technology-driven society,” Mavetera said.

She challenged POTRAZ to take strong steps towards digitalizing the country’s economy by actively funding and implementing various ICT projects, seeking financial support from the Universal Service Fund.
