A Harare-based pirate taxi driver, Ngonidzashe Chiwanga, has been handed a 20-year jail term for raping a 10-year-old girl in December last year.
Chiwanga had offered the minor a lift to Highfields high-density suburb, but instead diverted the route to a secluded area in Glen Norah A, where the crime occurred.
Magistrate Fadzai Mtombeni delivered the verdict, citing overwhelming evidence that Chiwanga had taken advantage of the victim’s age.
The court heard that Chiwanga had dropped off other passengers before diverting the route, and later attempted to buy the victim’s silence with a US$1 payment.
The victim was assisted by a well-wisher who took her home and filed a police report, leading to Chiwanga’s arrest.
