By Amanda Tanaka Muzhandamuri
Katswe Sistahood is assisting vulnerable women to engage in projects which will sustain them. .Katswe Sistahood Programs Officer Chengetai Chininga said that women are capable of doing projects which will make them independent.

Katswe Sistahood is a young women-centred organization that was formed in 2007 and promotes gender equality as well as access to social services, promotes programs which eradicate unfair geographical, class and gender differences when accessing healthcare services.

In an interview with this publication Chininga said that the organization believes in empowering women so that they are independent.
‘Katswe believes that empowering women and girls, both able-bodied and those with disabilities, in the social, political and economic spheres is an effective approach to ending gender inequality. Katswe made strides towards renewing the hope of 340 vulnerable young women and girls in Epworth and Torwood communities and demonstrate to them, by availing concrete opportunities, that indeed, there is always a plan B,’

‘The project has provided a package of training in life skills, vocational skills, financial literacy and entrepreneurship as well as safe spaces for rekindling the hopes of young women and girls,’ she said.

Chininga also added that the organisation contributed in the economic empowerment of young women .She added that the women were educated on how to budget finances.
‘ Katswe Sistahood educated 64 young women to make various products for resale such as detergents, floor polish, pine gel, petroleum jelly and also educated 76 young women to make reusable sanitary wear, Ankara slippers, skirts and bonnets for resale. A total of 10 clubs were formed in both districts as a way to formalize and constitutionalize the entrepreneurial activities of young women and girls in the project,’

‘Katswe has continued to coach and mentor the young women and girls to shift from reactive to proactive financial decision making and provides them with the attitudes, knowledge, skills, and self-efficacy that they need to adopt good financial management practices in terms of earning, spending, saving, borrowing, and investing,’ she added.
