Mazowe Rural District Council (MRDC) in Mashonaland Central Province, Zimbabwe, has given all residents and operators within one of its local areas seven days to destroy all illegal structures, reminiscent of the 2005 Operation Murambatsvina, or face action with costs from the rural local authority.

In a public notice dated 10 October 2023, MRDC Chief Executive Officer Liberty Mufandaedza said the council has given Glendale dwellers, about 52 km north of the Capital Harare, up to the 17th of October 2023 to destroy all illegal structures as outlined in the Regional, Town and Country Planning Act.

“Mazowe Rural District Council is invoking the Regional, Town and Country Planning Act Chapter 29:12 by embarking on an exercise of demolishing all illegal structures within Glendale.

“Therefore, all those with illegal structures are advised to demolish them within the next 7 days with effect from 9 October 2023.

“Please take note that failure to heed this warning by the 17th of October 2023 will result in Council demolishing the structures and the responsible person shall meet all the costs of demolition,” he said in the notice.

Those trading illegally in the area have not been spared.

“Also take note that all those who are trading on undesignated areas are advised to vacate those areas with immediate effect,” reads the notice.

Glendale houses approximately 10 000 residents.
