Three armed robbers that raided a Mukuru Shop at Maboleni business centre, Lower Gweru in the Midlands Province, on the 28th of March 2023 were arrested in Nkayi on their way to Bulawayo, Police have confirmed.
The three have been identified as Tapiwa Zhazha (31), Courage Bongani (31) and Gift Ncube (24).
After the arrest, police recovered a 9mm calibre pistol, ZAR5 010, US$64 and a cell phone.
On the day, police say, the three raided one Michael Mpofu who was manning a Mukuru.com shop in Maboleni at gun point.
Though police did not state the exact amount that was robbed, sources who witnessed the robbery claim the three men got away with more than US$1000.
“The 3 were arrested in Nkayi after robbing the shop of around US$1000.
“The owner of the shop… together with Mr Ncube of the neighbouring shop chased after the robbers who fled in a Honda fit from Maboleni to Bhembe, Sogwala and Nkayi road until they abandoned their Honda Fit car and escaped on foot,” said the source.
Midlands Police Spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, said
a tipoff from the public led to the arrest of the three in Nkayi.
“Once again police would like to applaud members of the public who supplied positive information which led to the arrest of the three suspects,” he said.
He also shared a detailed version of what transpired in Maboleni.
“On 28 March 2023 at around 1000 hours, Michael Mpofu, a man aged 23 of Maboleni, was at his work place manning Mukuru.Com Shop when he was approached by three men.
“One of the men pointed Michael Mpofu with a pistol and demanded cash.
“He gave the three all the cash he had in the cash box and the robbers fled the scene in a get-away Honda Fit motor vehicle registration AFB 5997.
“A report was made at ZRP Maboleni who attended the scene and on the same day, at around 2000 hours, information was received to the effect that the three suspects had been spotted in Nkayi heading towards Bulawayo.
“Police swiftly reacted and arrested the three suspects.
“The arrest led to the recovery of a Star Becheverria Pistol, 9mm calibre, with 5 rounds, cash ZAR5 010-00, US$64-00 and a Samsung Galaxy M13 cell phone,”
Inspector Mahoko said.
