Gold mining has become a source of income for almost every youth living in Midlands province of Zimbabwe.
Due to economic challenges companies closed up, graduates are jobless and also young teenagers are dropping out of school ,which is the reason why mining has become the source of living for many people in Midlands especially young people because this is the only type of job which is still paying in Zimbabwe.
Regardless of how hard mining tends to be most people has sacrificed to practice it, some even die during mining process especially those practicing underground mining ,some miners also use sewage water to clean their staff which is harmful to their health as they can contract water born disease.
In an interview with one artisanal miner, he told this reporter that mine life is very hard and it is the true reflation that Zimbabwe needs economical healing as he narrated how young pregnant and nursing mothers who are supposed to be at home are in mines practicing surface mining activities while others are selling their product in mines while caring their babies on their backs ,he said some end up being engaged in unprotected sexual activities with artisanal miners which might result in them contracting STIs which is harmful as these diseases can spread so fast
“It’s so sad that our women and children who are supposed to be at home enjoying the luxurious life at home are now in mines practicing heavy jobs so as to earn a living which is dangerous because they are now vulnerable to notorious behaviors associated with mines ”said one of the artisanal miners
Some students especially high school students are said to be attended school during the week and go to mine during the weekends which tends to be a harmful threat to other school students as these children are bringing a violent culture they adopted from the mine to school and also these children are likely to have their future destroyed .
