Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa has cancelled his trip to the United Nations General Assembly in New York, citing a packed domestic schedule for the last quarter of 2024.
This is the first time Mnangagwa will not attend the assembly since taking office in 2017, excluding for the COVID-19 pandemic years.
Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister, Fredrick Shava, will deliver Mnangagwa’s statement on his behalf, as he is said to be already in New York for the assembly.
Some insiders are whispering that growing tensions within the Zanu PF party over extending Mnangagwa’s term, as well as safety concerns, may have contributed to the cancellation.
Recent incidents, including a helicopter crash and break-ins at his family members’ homes, have heightened paranoia among his aides.
