Masvingo, Zimbabwe – In a urgent public health alert, the Masvingo City Council has warned residents of the rapidly spreading Monkeypox (MPox) outbreak in Southern Africa, emphasizing the need for immediate precautions by residents.
The local authority says the viral disease is characterized by symptoms including fever, headache, muscle aches, swollen lymph nodes, and rash or blisters on the skin, and its residents should alert of such.
To mitigate the risk of infection, the council says, residents are advised to practice good hygiene, avoid close contact with infected individuals, wear protective clothing, and avoid traveling to countries where the outbreak has been reported.
The council says suspected cases should be immediately reported, urging residents to contact the Masvingo City Health Department without delay if they or someone they know is experiencing symptoms or has traveled from affected countries.
With the outbreak spreading rapidly across the African continent, the council says it is working to ensure early detection of the disease.
Residents have been urged to stay informed through official health channels and local authorities to ensure their safety and the safety of their community.
The Masvingo City Council’s warning comes as the World Health Organization (WHO) continues to monitor the global spread of MPox, with cases reported in multiple countries so far.
