A-19-year-old man was stabbed to death while coming from watching a football match, accompanied by two other colleagues at Matambo Business Centre on the outskirts of Gweru, at around 7pm on Saturday.
The three, Fana Ntini (19), Emmanuel Phiri (33) and Jefta
Mkhwananzi (22) are said were walking home from watching a football game at Matambo Business Centre when they met two men, Darling Tshuma and Moses Moyo, going the opposite direction.
One of the two men, Tshuma, produced a knife and attacked the three colleagues over a previous grudge.
One of the colleagues, Ntini, died after being pursued and stabbed, the other sustained a serious injury after being stabbed on the thigh, while the other escaped unhurt.
Midlands Police Spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, confirmed the murder, saying police are seized with the matter to ensure justice prevails.
“Police are investigating murder and attempted murder cases where a 19 year old man was stabbed to death by two assailants, while walking home from watching a football match.
“The incident occurred in Matambo area, Gweru on 27 May 2023 at around 1900
hours,” Inspector Mahoko said.
“(the three) ..were walking home after having been watching a football match at Matambo Business Centre, off Matobo road, when they met two other men.
“One of the men identified as Darlington Tshuma, aged 29 suddenly pulled a knife from his waist and stabbed Jefta Mkhwananzi once on the right thigh over previous grudges.
“Sensing danger, Fana Ntini and Emmanuel Phiri ran in different directions.
“The two suspects chased Fana Ntini, caught up with him and stabbed him once on
the stomach with a knife and he fell down.
“The suspects went away from the scene,” Inspector Mahoko said.
He said the following day, on the 28th of May 2023, at around 0800 hours, villagers searched around the
bush and found the dead body of Fana Ntini.
After a report was made at ZRP Gweru Rural, one of the suspects, Darlington Tshuma, has since been arrested.
Inspector Mahoko said police recovered a blood stained Colombia knife, two home made knives and a catapult used to commit the crime were recovered.
The deceased’s body is in Gweru Provincial Hospital mortuary while the other
stabbed victim, Jefta Mkhwananzi is admitted in the same hospital receiving treatment for the
serious right thigh injury he sustained.
Inspector Mahoko
appealed to members of the public with information on the where abouts of Moses
Moyo, aged 31 of Springvale, who is still at large, to contact any police station.
