Man murders in-law over mangoes

In a mind boggling incident that occured on Sunday (22nd of January 2023) in Lalapanzi, just a few kilometers outside Gweru in the Midlands, a-52-year old man was beaten to death by his brother in law for eating mangoes taken from his orchard.
Its mangoe season and most people would not put much value to the fruit but one Samson Maredza (42) from Bhudhe 2 Village in Lalapanzi could not stomach finding his brother inlaw, John Munjanja (52), feasting on his orchard mangoes, given by his sister, Muchaneta Munjanja (Maredzva’s wife).
In a moment of rage, after questioning why he was given the mangoes without his authority, Maredzva hit Munjanja several times with a log and brick resulting in the latter’s death.
Midlands Police Spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, confirmed the murder saying the suspect, Samson, is in police custody and assisting police with investigations.
“Zimbabwe Republic Police reports a case of murder in which a 52 year old man died on the spot after being gravely assaulted by his brother in-law,” he said. “Muchaneta’s husband, Samson Maredzva… questioned him as to why he was given mangoes against his will.
“A misunderstanding is said to have risen between the two resulting in [Samson Maredzva] striking [John Munjanja] several times on the upper body with a log and brick and John Maredzva succumbed to the injuries,” Insp. Mahoko continued.
He said a report was made to the Police leading to the suspect’s arrest.
The body of the deceased was ferried to Gweru Provincial Hospital.
Inspector Mahoko challenged members of the public to shun violence as it leads to unnecessary deaths.
“Once again, we urge members of the public to desist from resorting to violence when resolving disputes to avoid unnecessary loss of lives,” Inspector Mahoko said.
