Gokwe, Zimbabwe – A Gokwe South man has been hospitalised after jumping off a moving pickup truck before being struck by a sedan while trying to flee from paying his hiking fare along the Gokwe-Mateta road on Tuesday (25/06/2024) at around 9 am.
The man has been identified as Trynos Mudoti (24) of Mutero Village under Chief Nemangwe.
Police say Mudoti was traveling in Marlvine Zvidzai’s White Mitsubishi Colt pickup when the driver requested payment for the journey.
In a desperate bid to escape, Mudoti leaped from the moving vehicle, only to be struck by a South African-registered Mazda 3 sedan, driven by one Peter Manda, who was traveling in the opposite direction.
“Upon reaching the 2 km peg, Marlvine Zvidzai asked him to pay for the journey. Mudoti jumped off the vehicle and tried to run away without paying the money.
“He was suddenly hit by a South African registered Mazda 3 motor vehicle which was being driven by Peter Manda who [was] travelling towards Gokwe Centre. He fell on the gravel road and sustained a fractured right leg,” Midlands Police Spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said.
The impact left Mudoti with a fractured right leg and was rushed to Gokwe South District Hospital for treatment
The case was reported at ZRP Gokwe traffic, and Mudoti remains hospitalized.
