Gweru Polytechnic College and Mtapa Seventh-Day Adventist (SDA) Church have received widespread acclaim for their groundbreaking initiative to empower people with disabilities.

Speaking at the recent graduation ceremony, Guest of Honour Senator Shiri praised the partnership for funding training programs for over 70 individuals with disabilities in various self-help projects.

“I would like to extend my gratitude to Gweru Polytechnic and SDA for identifying the gap in society that people with disabilities require capacitation and empowerment in terms of skills training,” said Miss Itai Mariko, speaking on Senator Shiri’s behalf.

Senator Shiri noted that people with disabilities have been left behind in developmental activities and relegated to charity cases since time immemorial.

“The exhibited remarkable collaboration embodies the spirit of inclusivity and community development,” Senator Shiri said. “By providing opportunities for people with disabilities to acquire skills and knowledge, Gweru Polytechnic and Mtapa SDA Church are helping to break down barriers and promote self-reliance.”

The training programs, offered through Gweru Polytechnic’s Integrated Skills Expansion Program, cover areas such as motor mechanics, fashion design, food nutrition, auto electrics, cosmetology, and information technology.

Mtapa SDA Church’s support for this initiative aligns with the Seventh-day Adventist Church’s values of compassion, service, and uplifting others.

Senator Shiri emphasized that the partnership goes a long way in breaking barriers and fostering recognition and inclusivity.

“It is imperative that as a society we make a conscious effort to ensure that people with disabilities are given tools and opportunities to achieve their full potential.”

Senator Shiri also stressed the need for society to provide graduates with tools to kick-start their entrepreneurial ventures.

“Training of this kind plays a crucial role in empowering individuals. It equips them with necessary skills and knowledge to become independent, self-reliant, and productive members of society.”

Gweru Polytechnic College Principal Washington Muchandiwana reiterated the college’s commitment to providing equal opportunities for all, regardless of ability.

“We’re grateful for Mtapa SDA Church’s partnership and shared vision.”

The graduation ceremony marked a significant milestone for the 80 graduates, who received certificates.
