Gweru bids farewell to Police Constable Sakala speed chase accident victim in tense atmosphere

Gweru, Zimbabwe – Senga Cemetery was today the Thursday 1st of May 2025 scene of profound grief and simmering anger as hundreds of mourners gathered to bid farewell to Taurai Mhlahla, a victim of the recent fatal accident involving a high-speed police chase near Sakala Shopping Centre. The atmosphere was palpably tense, thick with the bitter resentment expressed by Mhlahla’s relatives, workmates, and residents of the surrounding community.
Mhlahla, along with another individual, tragically lost their lives when their vehicle was reportedly caught in the crossfire of a police pursuit targeting suspected illegal miners, colloquially known as “makorokoza.” The circumstances surrounding the accident have ignited widespread outrage, prompting calls for accountability and a re-evaluation of police tactics within the city.
The funeral proceedings were punctuated by emotional outbursts and open displays of anguish. A group of artisanal miners, many of whom identified as friends and associates of Mhlahla, openly sang songs deriding the police force, their voices echoing through the cemetery. The provocative display underscored the deep-seated distrust and animosity felt towards law enforcement in the wake of the tragedy.
Speaking to this publication, a visibly distraught aunt of the deceased, identified only as Mai Chiedza, struggled to contain her emotions. “They took away a good man, a provider. What kind of justice is this? Chasing young men and ending the life of an innocent person? We will never forgive them,” she lamented, wiping away tears.
Adding to the chorus of grief, a close work colleague of Mhlahla, who preferred to remain anonymous, described the devastating impact of his loss. “Taurai was the glue that held our team together. He was always willing to lend a hand, to offer advice. He was more than just a colleague; he was a friend, a brother. Now, he’s gone, because of reckless actions,” he stated, his voice cracking with emotion.
The sentiment of profound loss was echoed by a neighbor, Mrs. Sibanda, who emphasized Mhlahla’s generosity and community spirit. “Around twenty families, business partners, and the entire community have been robbed of a very kind and helpful person. He was always the first to offer assistance, whether it was with transport, advice, or just a listening ear. This is a devastating blow to us all.”
The incident has sparked a wider debate within Gweru regarding the proportionality of police responses to alleged crimes. Critics argue that the aggressive tactics employed by law enforcement often endanger innocent civilians and that a more measured approach is required.
“The police need to understand that their actions have consequences,” commented a local businessman who attended the funeral. “They cannot simply put lives at risk in the pursuit of suspects. There needs to be a thorough investigation into this incident, and those responsible must be held accountable.”
As the casket was lowered into the ground, the mournful atmosphere was further amplified by the melancholic melodies of police mocking choruses. The echoes of sorrow served as a stark reminder of the tragic circumstances surrounding Mhlahla’s death and the urgent need for systemic changes within law enforcement to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
The community now awaits the outcome of ongoing investigations into the Sakala speed chase accident, hoping that justice will be served and that Mhlahla’s death will not be in vain.
