Gokwe – Rujeko Hub has come to fruition with some of its projects finally giving profit after selling cabbages and Boer goats to purchase maize seed for its members for the summer cropping season.

Driven by Zimbabwe Coalition on Debt and Development (ZIMCODD) through its rural livelihoods programmes, with sharing of knowledge and trainings on financial literacy, Gokwe South villagers from ward 13 came together to strengthen the project.

The project is a rural community-driven initiative with livestock and horticultural activities.

With a Boer goat project which started in 2023, with just 10 goats, and now over 50, Rujeko Hub members agreed to sell two animals at a price of US$150 each, thus raising US$300.

They also sold over 200 heads of cabbages from their garden, raising an additional US$100.

Speaking to Kwedu News, Rujeko Hub member and senior ZIMCODD Social and Economic Justice Ambassador (SEJA), Tendai Bhamu, said they bought maize seed for each of the 21 group members.

“Takatengesa (we sold) two Boer goats at $150 each, which gave us $300 plus 200 heads cabbages at $1 for two and got $100.

“In total we got $400. Takatenga mbeu (we bought seed) at $20 per 5kg and each member got a 5kg pack,” Bhamu said.

Bhamu said members had already prepared their fields for the maize summer cropping season with digging of pfumvudza holes.
