Gokwe North Rural District Council has unveiled a comprehensive Master Plan aimed at transforming the district into a premier eco-tourism destination and economic hub.
The plan, presented by Lead Planner Brilliant Mavima, focuses on bridge reconstruction, aerodrome rehabilitation, and infrastructure development to improve accessibility and attract investment.
The district’s current state of infrastructure is a major challenge, with critical bridges like Sessame Bridge washed away, exacerbating accessibility problems. The four earth aerodromes in the district are also unusable, with Chireya Aerodrome affected by human settlement and development. Mavima emphasized the need for collaboration with engineers and environmental stakeholders on emergency repairs and alternative transport arrangements.
The Master Plan envisions resilient bridge designs and aerodrome upgrades that prioritize safety, durability, and environmental sustainability. The plan also aims to improve the district’s road network, which is in a dire state due to flooding, unsuitable soil types, and inadequate maintenance. This will enhance connectivity to economic hubs like Nembudziya Growth Point and Rural Service Centres, stimulating economic activity and social connectivity.
Mavima expressed optimism that Gokwe North will emerge as a premier eco-tourism destination, renowned for its pristine landscapes, rich biodiversity, and authentic cultural experiences. The plan also focuses on integrated urban planning, sustainable land use practices, and stakeholder engagement to ensure inclusive and equitable growth.
The council expects immediate efforts to improve infrastructure and connection to economic hubs, attracting investment and stimulating economic activity. By 2047, the population is expected to reach 665,721, and the plan seeks to ensure that the district’s growth is sustainable, equitable, and benefits all residents.
