Forex dealer loses US$7 400 at gun point

A Gweru foreign currency dealer on Wednesday (22 November 2023) at around 3:30 am lost US$7 400 at gunpoint as he was descending from his flat along 5th Street in the Central Business District, on his way to seal a deal with a Harare bound person, Midlands Police have revealed.
The swift early morning heist on the 31 year old illegal forex dealer was done by four men, yet to be identified, who were wielding a pistol and a short gun.
It is said they snatched the cash stuffed bag and varnished into the darkness.
The dealer has been identified as Crowson Tangawarima, and the robbery happened as he stepped down from the stairway of the flats.
Midlands Police Spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, following the robbery, urged those interested in forex trading to legalise their business and put in place basic security measures needed for such.
“…we implore upon the public that when carrying large sums of money, they should put in place water tight security measures.
“Those who wish to do forex trading business should get guidance on legalising the business along with basic security requirements from monetary authorities,” he said.
Sharing more details on robbery Inspector Mahoko said: “The robbery victim Crowson Tangawarima (31) was carrying a bag containing cash US$7 400-00 intending to get into Gweru CBD where he wanted to do a transaction with someone who was going to Harare in.
“It is alleged, upon stepping down from the stairway, he was accosted by four unknown men, who were wielding two guns.
“One of the men was holding a pistol and another had a shotgun.
“One of the men snatched the bag with cash and they ran away, disappearing into the darkness.
“Total value stolen is US$7 400-00 and we appeal for assistance from the public to get to the bottom of the case,” said Inspector Mahoko.
