Harare giants, Dynamos Football Club Chief Executive Officer, Jonathan Mashingaidze, has revealed that initial plans to host their Confederation of African Football (CAF) Confederation Cup preliminary round match against ZESCO United of Zambia in South Africa have been abandoned due to possible clashes with the local, yet to be released, league calendar.
“We tried and failed to secure Orlando Stadium in South Africa because the upcoming new season’s fixtures in South Africa are yet to be finalized,” Mashingaidze is quoted having said in a local Zimbabwean daily.
“So, they couldn’t grant us any stadium because the start of their new season is scheduled for around the same time as our CAF Confederation Cup match,” he said.
Dembare, as Dynamos is affectionately known to local fans, will now host their opponents at the National Stadium in Gaborone, Botswana on the weekend of August 16-18.
Mashingaidze expressed satisfaction with the alternative arrangement, calling on Zimbabweans in the south-western neighbouring country to rally behind the team.
“There are thousands of Zimbabweans residing in Botswana, and we hope they will turn out in force to support the team,” he said.
A delegation from Dynamos and the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) was scheduled to travel to Botswana to finalize logistical arrangements, including paperwork, ticketing, hotels, sponsors, advertising agencies, and transport.
The match marks Dynamos’ long-awaited return to the continental football extravaganza after their victory in the 2023 Chibuku Super Cup.
