A-43-year-old man from Chiwundura, under Chief Gambiza, has been arrested for assaulting his 76 year old father to death on the 30th of April 2023.

The accused, Amos Tshuma from Kurimakwakanaka Village, Chiwundura ward 10, is said returned home in the morning drunk from a night of drinking.

He then had an argument with his sister before the deceased tried to intervene, leading to the assault.

Midlands Police Spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the tragic incident.

“Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms investigating a case of murder in which a 76-year-old man died after being severely assaulted by his son.

“The incident occurred on 30 April 2023 around 0700 hours at Village Kurimakwakanaka under Chief Gambiza in Gweru.

“On 30 April 2023 and at about 0700hours Amos Tshuma, a male aged 43 of village Kurimakwakanaka arrived at his father’s homestead from a beer drink.

“It is alleged that he had a misunderstanding with his sister and started assaulting her.

“Remias Tshuma aged 76 years, father to Amos Tshuma tried to refrain him from further assaulting his sister.

“It is said that this did not go well with Amos Tshuma who turned to his father and assaulted him indiscriminately all over the body with a stick and he died on the spot,” Inspection Mahoko said.

The murder was reported to the police and Amos was arrested.

Inspector Mahoko condemned the use of violence when trying to resolve issues.

“Once again, we urge members of the public to desist from resorting to violence when resolving disputes to avoid unnecessary loss of lives,” he said.

Chiwundura ward 10 Councilor, Resta Muswere, also confirmed the tragedy and gave her version of events.

“He came back drunk from where he was drinking overnight, at a funeral I think.

“Then when he got home, he started arguing with his mother and started chasing after her with a stick.

“He beat her twice with the stick but she managed to escape and jumped the fence to the neighbours.

“Then he went after his sister but failed to catch her.

“Then he saw his father, and the father is an old person. He started beating him with sticks outside their yard.

“He broke his father’s hands in the process.

“So the mother was now screaming for help and people came to the rescue.

“From there, he went next door, to Mai Nomsa’s homestead, she realised what was happening and she then tried to hold him.

“Amos then asked Mai Nomsa if she could manage to hold him, luckily, one of the youths realised that Mai Nomsa was about to be beaten up and he intervened, tripped him and others joined and tie him up.

“He had slept at a funeral and came back drunk,” Councilor Muswere said.

She called for the establishment of a police base near the Gambiza shopping centre in the ward as murder and assault cases have increased in the recent past.

“We need a police base at DDF.

“The’re old buildings which are not being used, so we ask police to come and camp there.

“The guy was arrested along with another man who stabbed a woman in the same area.

“So as a community we are asking that such people should not be given bail because at ward 10 we now have too many murders, some fighting and killing each other.

“That’s why we are saying at least if we have a police base camp at DDF,” she said.

Councilor Muswere said the nearest police base is in the next ward, 11, about 5 kilometers away.
