The Dorset community in Shurugwi South, Zimbabwe, is coming together to support the inaugural Anti-Drug Abuse and Child Marriage campaign, rescheduled for November in ward 21’s Dorset Resettlement area. This event aims to create a safer and healthier community, and former Shurugwi South MP Tapiwanashe Matangaidze has earned praise for donating a full beast to support the initiative.
Locals are expressing gratitude, with businessperson Patricia Munsaka saying, “Now that the food has been offered, let’s ensure everything flows smoothly.” Renowned poet Siphosami Ndlovu emphasized that only those involved in harmful activities oppose this crucial event.
Development activist Mwanakomana wemu Ndost highlighted Matangaidze’s support, linking it to President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s Multi-Sectoral Drug and Substance Abuse Plan, launched in June 2024. Zimbabwe also joined the world in commemorating the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on June 26.
The campaign seeks to combat drug abuse and child marriage through community empowerment and education. By promoting girls’ education and raising awareness about the dangers of drug abuse, the community hopes to create a better future.
The campaign has gained momentum despite initial hurdles, including an alleged block by local Zanu PF District Chairperson Naison Ntini. However, the community’s determination remains unwavering.
In a related development, Zanu PF Shurugwi District Coordinating Committee member, Noel Mposi, announced a meeting with youths on October 16 to further solidify plans for the anti-drug abuse initiative through sports and arts, now slated for early November following the party conference.
The campaign has received widespread support, demonstrating the community’s commitment to combating drug abuse and child marriage.
