Analysts say with the United States of America President elect, Donald Trump, coming back into power on his second term, funding for LGBTQ+ projects and activities in the country, especially the education sector, will be cut to curb what Trump said is “grooming” and imposition of gender ideologies” into children.

They say Donald Trump’s 2024 Presidential campaign has highlighted his plans for American education, focusing on universal school choice, curriculum changes, elected school principals, and dismantling the U.S. Department of Education to give more control to states.

President Trump vowed to cut federal funding for schools promoting “critical race theory,” “transgender insanity,” or “inappropriate racial, sexual or political content.”

In his vision for American schools in his 2024 Presidential campaign, he proposed Universal School Choice which allows parents to choose where their children attend school, and also determine changes in school curriculum.

He said there is need to cut federal funding for schools promoting inappropriate racial, sexual or political content.

School Principals should be elected, he said, to increase local control of schools.

He also said there is need to ban gender-affirming surgery in schools, despite experts in the country disputing the claim saying no evidence of such surgeries being performed.

Trump’s claims about gender-affirming surgeries in schools have been widely criticized and debunked, with medical associations and school nurses emphasizing that surgeries require parental consent, and most schools don’t provide such procedures.

Trump’s stance on the education sector has sparked controversy, particularly regarding LGBTQ+ rights.

However, some Democrats members argue that the party’s position on transgender rights contributed to Vice President Kamala Harris’ loss to the Republicans’ Trump.

As the debate around gender identity and sexual orientation in schools continues, many teachers, however, say these topics rarely come up in their classrooms.

Trump’s stance on the LGBTQ+ rights is expected to live a deep mark on the trajectory of the country as worse policies from his previous term are perceived.

LGBTQ+ advocates have also confirmed that the general feeling is that Trump’s second term will be more hostile.

In terms of policies, tipped is the abolishment of gender-affirming care for minors, rolling back Title IX protections for transgender students, eliminating Medicare and Medicaid funding for hospitals providing gender-affirming care.

During his campaigns, Trump also said school vouchers and charter schools should be supported, aligning with Project 2025’s goals to eliminate the Department of Education and gut protections for LGBTQ+ students, despite him distancing himself from the project.

Analysts say his administration may introduce updates to Title IX, potentially limiting trans students’ participation in sports, another hot debate in the country.

Apart from education Trump also wants to bar trans-military service as he did previously, and also charge Teachers with sex discrimination for affirming students’ gender identities.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has expressed concerns about Trump’s policies, stating they would “erase protections for LGBTQ people” and “mandate discrimination.”

The ACLU plans to defend the LGBTQ community against these anticipated hostile policies.

These developments have implications for trans individuals in the USA, particularly youth, and the broader LGBTQ+ community who enjoyed the Democratic party leniency and support.

During Trump’s campaign in October, analysts say about 41% of campaign advertising spending targeted trans people, specifically trans athletes and children receiving gender-affirming care. However, most Americans do not prioritize trans issues over economy or abortion rights.

Under Trump’s previous administration, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos restricted trans women’s participation in women’s sports, citing Title IX violations.

Thus the incoming Trump administration is expected to introduce updates to federal law to exclude transgender students from playing on teams or experiencing school in ways that align with their gender identity.
