Disability Act on the cards
By Dumisani Ndlovu
Director in the office of Special Advisor on National Disability in the Office of the President, E.D Mnangagwa and Cabinet, Mr Macnon Chirinzepi has revealed that a Disability Act is being crafted to deal with enforcement, non-compliance and implementation of the national disability policy.
Both Zimbabwe Disability Policy and UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities covers areas such as accessibility, rehabilitation, participation in political life, equality and non-discrimination of the People with Disabilities (PWDs).
Various Disability Organizations are on records demanding the enactment of the act in order to ensure the proper implementation of the Disability Policy and its implementation guidelines.
“Legally we are also saying we want to revisit our disabled persons act which is now outdated and now we have the new act in the brewing. It has gone through various stages. Very soon we will be having that act so that we can empower people with disabilities. So that whatever we say the policy can be enforced into reality and people with disabilities can fully claim their rights, “said Director Chirinzepi.
He was responding to questions from journalists on the sidelines of the National Council of Disabled Persons of Zimbabwe, (NCDPZ) elective congress on what government was doing to ensure full rights for people with disabilities.
Mr Chirinzepi also said the government is committed to promote the inclusion of persons with disability in the mainstream economy such as mining and agricultural sectors.
Other special aspect in the Disability Policy includes job opportunities for persons with disabilities.
Hopefully you are ok.
