Zimbabwe has one of the highest cases of kidney problems in Africa which require dialysis as part of their treatment.

Dialysis is a treatment that aids one’s body to remove extra fluid and waste products from the blood when the kidneys are failing to do so.
According to the 2021 peer reviewed journal published by the American Journal of Kidney Diseases as recorded by ZimFact, the prevalence rate of dialysis in Zimbabwe stood at 33.4 patients per million population, the study further notes that the estimated prevalence rate among males is 46.0 patients per million population and 21.8 patients per million population among females.
According to journal article published in 2022, in Zimbabwe, cases of kidney failure have been on an upward trend owing to hypertension, diabetes and aging.
Zimfact notes that Dialysis treatment costs range from $80 – $220 per session in private institutions and the government in 2018 committed to provide free dialysis care in public hospitals to cater for people who cannot afford to pay for the cost of treatment.
It is said that based on a person’s condition, one may require one or two sessions per week and sometimes three sessions per week and most facilities offering dialysis services are in Harare, with a few outside the capital .
