A daring five men band of robbers armed with a pistol descended on Zhombe Grain Marketing Board at around 1 am recently, getting away with over 18 tonnes of Compound D fertilizer and groundnut seeds, Kwedu News can reveal.
The thieves also got away with 22 tents.
The five robbers ambushed two security guards who were on duty, ordered them to lie down before tying them to poles with ropes.
After neutralising the guards and taking away their cellphones, the robbers then drove a truck into the deport, loaded the stolen goods and made off with them.
Midlands Police Spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, said they are seeking assistance from the public through information that may lead to the suspects’ arrest as investigations are underway.
He said a manhunt for the five has been launched, narrating in detail how the agriculture inputs heist occured, and the discovery six hours later.
“Police in Zhombe have launched a manhunt for five men in connection with a case of robbery which occurred at the Grain Marketing Board Zhombe Depot in October 2023 at about 0100 hours.
“Circumstances are that the suspects, who were armed with a pistol, arrived at GMB Zhombe where two security guards were on night duty.
“They ordered them to lie down. They tied their hands to poles using ropes and took away the guards’ 2 cell phones before driving their truck into the yard and loaded 360 bags of 50 Killograms of Super Fert Compound D Fertiliser, 8X50 kilograms groundnuts seed and 22X11 metres blue tents and drove away.
“The offence was discovered by another security guard who arrived to commence a morning duty at 0600 hours,” Inspector Mahoko said.
“Total value stolen is USD13 545-00 and police investigations are progressing,” he added.
