Couple bashed with iron bars at gunpoint during robbery

By Delicious Mathuthu

A couple was on Thursday last week bashed with iron bars on their heads by a three men gang armed with a riffle during a robbery at Plot Motel, Shurugwi, Midlands Province in Zimbabwe

The robbers, who invaded the Motel in the wee hours of the morning, got away with US$508 cash and are still at large.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP confirmed the robbery and are appealing to the public for assistance with information that may lead to the gang’s arrest.

Circumstances to the robbery are that the couple, Victor Hwenje and his wife Laiza Domeki, both 33 years, were fast asleep at around 2am when the three suspects silently invaded the motel.

Hwenje and Domeki heard noise in the kitchen and when Hwenje went to investigate the noise he was met with a rifle pointing at him by one of the suspects.

An attempt to neutralise the riffle wielding suspect went sideways as he got bashed on the head with an iron bar from behind by one of the other suspects as they wrestled.

“He grabbed the barrel of the rifle and the two wrestled. One of the suspects struck Hwenje several times on the head with an Iron bar until he fell down,” Midlands Police Spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said as he shared more details into the robbery.

He said after the wrestling incident, the infuriated suspects proceeded to bash his wife with the iron bars, on the head as well, demanding money.

“The suspects proceeded to Laiza, struck her with the Iron bar on the head demanding cash.

“She subsequently surrendered cash amounting to US$508.

“They also took an Itel cellphone before vanishing in the darkness,” Inspector Mahoko said.
