The construction of the ED Mnangagwa Law School at Midlands State University (MSU)’s Kwekwe Campus is advancing swiftly, with the state-of-the-art multipurpose facility on track for its targeted completion in August 2025, according to a senior official.
During a tour of the Midlands University Law School, initially expected to be attended by the Minister of Information Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Dr. Muswere, MSU’s Acting Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Gift Manyatera, highlighted President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s instrumental role in conceptualizing the law school. This contribution is reflected in the school bearing his name.
“His Excellency President Emmerson Mnangagwa is the visionary behind the law school in Kwekwe. The journey began with a 220-hectare farm donation from the Kwekwe City Council, intended for the establishment of an MSU campus. The Faculty of Law was the first to be conceptualized,” stated Dr. Manyatera.
Dr. Manyatera added that the construction of the state-of-the-art facility commenced in 2023.
“This infrastructure will be among the leading law schools in Africa, surpassing many in terms of facilities. This recognition honors the law school’s achievements and President Mnangagwa’s contributions to the Zimbabwean legal system,” he said.
The two-storey building, featuring lecture rooms, a moot court, an e-library, and an administration block, is expected to be completed by August 2025.Dr Manyatera said to date, the project has employed many workers, predominantly locals.
“The ED Mnangagwa Law School has provided employment for 300 people. It will also host other faculties, such as Agriculture and Architecture, and is expected to enroll over 1,000 students upon completion next year,” Dr. Manyatera explained.
Jointly funded by the Treasury and the university, the project will see further development after the initial block, including staff accommodation, student hostels, and additional infrastructure.Kwekwe Mayor Albert Zinhanga expressed his satisfaction with the progress during his closing remarks after the tour.
“We are honored to have the university in Kwekwe. The commitment from the university is commendable, and it is proving to be a success. The new campus will significantly boost Kwekwe city and the province’s Gross Domestic Product,” he said.
MSU has adopted a multi-campus approach, with campuses in Gweru, Zvishavane, Harare, and Bulawayo. The university is the largest in Zimbabwe in terms of enrollment.
