Mutare, Zimbabwe – A train accident at a level railway crossing in Mutare has left 29 learners from Versatile Academy injured, according to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP).
However, the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) has contradicted this figure, stating that only 12 pupils were injured in the incident.
The accident occurred on July 3, 2024, at around 7:30 am along Durban Road, Willowton, where the train hit the bus carrying the learners.
“The ZRP confirms a road traffic accident which occurred at a level railway crossing along Durban Road , Willowton, Mutare on 03/07/24 at around 0730 hours in which a goods train hit a Versatile School bus with learners on board.
“As a result 29 learners were injured and were referred to Victoria Chitepo Hospital for treatment,” Police said, while the NRZ said “twelve pupils were injured and taken to hospital where they are receiving treatment (at the time).”
The ZRP also alleges that the bus driver was wearing earphones at the time of the accident, while the NRZ claims that the driver failed to follow level crossing rules and attempted to beat the train to the crossing.
“The bus driver was allegedly putting on earphones when the accident occurred,” ZRP said while NRZ alleges that, “…preliminary investigations indicate the bus driver failed to follow level crossing rules and tried to beat the train to the level crossing, resulting in the accident.”
The incident has sparked concern among the public, with many calling for improved safety measures at level crossings.
“All drivers must stop at railway crossings, even if there is no railway light or siren alarm,” said one citizen.
“It’s high time NRZ invests in rail crossing boom gates with sensors to avoid such accidents,” added another.
The NRZ has acknowledged the need for improved safety measures, also warning that the accident is a “stark reminder to all drivers to exercise extreme caution and strictly adhere to road rules at level crossings.”
The railway company has also been urged to work with government to implement automated boom barriers at all rail level crossings.
