Gweru City Council has released the names of two employees who died yesterday (Wednesday 6 October 2024) after suffocating in a toxic gas infested sewer manhole at Athlone suburb while trying to unblock it.
The two employees, a man and a woman, have been identified as Richard Longwe and Mary Svinurai.
In a condolence message released today (Thursday October 7) Gweru City Mayor, Councilor Martin Chivhoko said the City will miss their contributions to service delivery.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Richard Longwe and Mary Svinurai, who tragically passed away while serving our community in Athlone.
“Our hearts go out to their families, friends and colleagues during this difficult time. May God grant you the comfort and strength to bear this immense loss.
“We honour their dedication in service to our City and we will deeply miss their contributions,” he said.
“May their memories stay with us forever and may they rest in peace. Please accept our sincerest condolences. We are with you in thought, Prayer and heart.”
The local authority stakeholders say the tragic loss came partly due to lack of protective clothing against the hazards associated with sewer line work.
Gweru City Council (GCC) Public Relations Office was swift in confirming the incident and expressed condolences to the families, promising a thorough investigation to prevent similar tragedies.
However, representatives of employees and residents criticized the local authority for negligence and inadequate safety measures, with Gweru City workers committee Chairperson Bhekiwe Jongwe, saying employees are underpaid, under-equipped and overworked.
