One of the country’s largest Chinese ferrochrome processing firms, JIN YI Enterprise Private (Pvt) Limited (Ltd) has mooted plans to construct solar and thermal power plants with a combined 300 megawatt (MW) capacity.
Being the third largest ferrochrome manufacturing company in Zimbabwe, based in Gweru, JIN YI is set to diversify into power generation as the country opens up the power generation sector to private players.
These plans were revealed during a tour of the JIN YI Enterprise premises in Gweru by the Midlands Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Owen Ncube.
A business opportunity window arising as the country faces perennial power shortages mainly due to low water levels at the Kariba Power Station and technical challenges at Hwange thermal power plant, the multi million dollar project is set to reduce the power demand deficit in the country.
Speaking after the tour of the enterprise, Hon. Ncube confirmed JIN YI’s plans and saying the government of Zimbabwe will continue to support such initiatives to improve power generation for economic development in the country.
“JIN YI Directors and Management, as Government we are aware of your future investment plans for a solar farm and coal-fired thermal power projects with combined capacity to produce 300 megawatts at initial stage.
“The promotion of renewable energy sources through the use of new and efficient technologies is core to the attainment of an upper middle income economy status,” Hon. Ncube said.
“Government will continue to provide an enabling business operating environment.
“Power generation has been improved through the commissioning of Hwange Unit 7 and 8 by His Excellency the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe Cde Dr. Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa.
“Furthermore, opportunities in thermal, solar and ethanol power generation have been created and extended to independent Power producers,” he added.
Meanwhile, Hon. Ncube applauded JIN YI Enterprise for its contribution to the Midlands Provincial economy, more so, employing more than 1000 Midlanders.
“The company is indeed a catalyst for Midlands Provincial economic growth and development as it contributes significantly to the ferrochrome international value chains and employment creation as more than 1000 people including locals are currently gainfully employed by JIN YI.”
The company is currently operating at 76% capacity producing approximately 80 000 tonnes per annum from its 5 electric furnaces.
Hon. Ncube also called on Gweru City Council to improve on its service delivery to attract business in the city, complimenting government efforts to promote investment.
“… I urge Gweru City to ensure they complement Government efforts aimed at investment promotion by providing key utilities like water, refuse collection and supportive road network that facilitates movement of goods and people,” he said.
