In a shocking incident that occured at Mahamba village under Chief Sayi in Gokwe South, a-nine-year-old Zhamba Primary School pupil hanged himself on a plate drying rack after failing to locate his missing sock and resultantly being told to abscond from school by his grandmother.
The sad incident occured last Wednesday (7/02/2024) at around 8am.
Circumstances leading to the tragic incident are that on the day, the now deceased identified as Clive Mpala doing grade four at Zhamba Primary School, failed to locate his pair of socks as he prepared for school.
Efforts by his grandmother to locate the pair also failed which subsequently led to his grandmother telling him not to go to school before leaving to a local business centre to buy groceries.
Upon her return, the grandmother found the boy hanging from the rack, already dead.
Midlands Police Spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the tragic incident saying police are investigating the incident.
“Police are investigating circumstances leading to the death of a 9 year old juvenile who was found hanging at home by his grandmother,” he said, before sharing more details.
“It is alleged that the now deceased Clive Mpala of Village Mahamba Chief Sai, Gokwe who was doing grade 4 at Zhamba Primary School, Gokwe South woke up to prepare for School.
“He did not locate his pair of socks and asked his Grandmother Patricia Munkuli a female aged 50 years who was staying with him.
“The grandmother is said to have also searched for the pair of socks and could not find them. She informed Mpala not to go to School.
“She then went to Zhamba Business Centre to buy groceries leaving Mpala at home. On her return she found the body of Mpala hanging from a shed at the homestead,” Inspector Mahoko said.
The boy’s body was conveyed to Gokwe South District Hospital.
Some villagers however are suspecting foul play as the rack which the boy was found hanging from was too low.
One villager, in one of the social media platforms expressed shock on the incident and raised suspicion on the boy’s death.
“Kuti ufunge kuti mwana arimu-grade 5 (grade 4) angafunga kuzvisungirira unozvishaya, chimwe chashamisa ndechokuti azvisungirira pachitara chendiro chinotova chipfupi paari, zvakaoma hazvo. Foul play cannot be ruled out, Ward 3 tarasikirwa (to even think that a grade (4) child can think of hanging himself, the other shocking thing is that the rack is actually shorter than him, this is shocking),” the villager said.
Inspector Mahoko said anyone who could be in the know of what actually transpired which can assist with investigations may confidentially contact the police.
“We appeal to anyone with information of what could have transpired which led to the death of the juvenile to contact the Police and assist in the investigations,” he said.
