A Belgian member of the European Union (EU) Election Observer Mission (EOM) to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has allegedly committed suicide in the country by jumping off a hotel window 12 floors up on Monday.

The Agence France Presse (AFP) reports that the Belgian, who was an IT Specialist assigned to the EU mission observing the DRC Presidential and Parliamentary elections is yet to be named.

The incident happened in a hotel in the country’s capital, Kinshasa, on Friday night.

However, DRC authorities have since launched investigations into the incident to determine what transpired despite some diplomatic sources in the country saying it was an outright suicide, but without providing justification.

AFP reports EU Spokesperson based in Brussels confirming the tragedy expressing sympathy, but refused to give details.

“Our thoughts and sympathy are with his family, friends and colleagues.

“While the investigation is underway in Kinshasa, we cannot comment further,” she said.

The DRC general elections ended laden with logistical problems, and irregularity allegations.

In November 2023 the EU reduced its observer mission to be sent to the African country from a proposed 50 member delegation to just eight.

At the time of the incident, the deceased IT expert was assisting the mission perform technical analysis of the electoral process and prepare a report.

Preliminary results released by the country’s electoral commission show that current Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi, who is running for reelection against 18 other, is leading, by over 80%.
