…Officer Faces Criminal Charges

Gweru, Zimbabwe – A police speed chase resulted in a fatal road traffic accident along Bristol Road in Gweru on April 28, 2025, at around 10:30 pm, resulting in the deaths of two occupants of a Toyota Aqua.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said the speed chase was with one Constable Sakala of ZRP Mkoba station, and the car he was chasing hit a tree, killing the occupants instantly.
The ZRP said it will press criminal charges against Constable Sakala and take disciplinary action.
Police also confirmed that investigations are underway in connection with the accident.
In a press statement, police noted that they have also taken note of videos circulating on social media platforms in relation to the accident.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that both criminal and disciplinary action will be taken on Constable Sakala for his conduct,” read the statement signed by Commissioner Chief Staff Officer for Press and Public Relations, Paul Nyathi.
The police expressed condolences to the families of the victims.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police expresses profound and deepest condolences to the families of the victims,” Commissioner Nyathi said.
He said further details on the accident will be released in due course as investigations continue.
