By Dumisani Ndlovu
Kwekwe United has emerged as the champions of the Central Region Soccer League, marking a significant achievement for the team and the town. After a tough season, Kwekwe United’s victory brings Premier League football back to Kwekwe for the first time in 15 years, since Lancashire Steel was relegated in 2009.
Despite facing strong competition from seasoned teams like Tongogara, Chapungu, Sheasham, Blanket Mine, and Dulibadzimu United, Kwekwe United defied expectations. Coached by Prince Matore, the team clinched the title with one game remaining, finishing the season with an impressive 71 points. Their record includes 21 wins, eight draws, and only two losses.
The decisive moment came when Tongogara, the only team that could have challenged Kwekwe’s lead, drew 1-1 against Sheasham. This result secured the championship for Kwekwe United, who had a bye that week.
Matore praised the players for their resilience and teamwork throughout the season. He noted their mental strength and ability to adapt to various challenges, which played a crucial role in their success. The team’s commitment and unity were key factors in overcoming a difficult start to the season.
As Kwekwe United prepares for their return to the Premier League, the community looks forward to an exciting new chapter in local football.
