A-27-year-old woman from Zvishavane was on Saturday (2 November 2024) arrested for strangling her day old baby to death and burying the body in her yard.
The chilling incident occurred on the 27th of October 2024 at Takaendesa Village under Chief Masunda in Zvishavane.
The woman has been identified as Talent Sibanda of the same village under Chief Masunda.
The gruesome infanticide was only discovered a week later after the suspect’s uncle, one Peterson Tauro, made inquiries into her disappeared pregnancy, leading to her confession.
“Its alleged that on 02 November 2024 at about 1000 hours one Peterson Tauro, a male adult, of Tauro Village Chief Masunda, Zvishavane who is an uncle to the suspect Talent Sibanda of Village Takaendesa Chief Masunda, Zvishavane heard rumours that Talent was no longer pregnant.
“He went to Sibanda and inquired. Sibanda then revealed to Tauro that she gave birth to a live baby girl on 27 October 2024, strangled the baby to death and buried the body in the yard,” Midlands Police Spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed.
Tauro then reported the killing to the Police who attended the crime scene and exhumed the baby’s body which was taken to Zvishavane District Hospital awaiting post-mortem.
