…….Farai lunga’s inspiring journey

By Dumisani Ndlovu

Gweru – Farai Lunga’s remarkable transformation from a double orphan living in poverty to a beacon of hope for underprivileged orphans is a testament to the human spirit’s capacity for resilience and determination.

Growing up in Chiwundura Communal Lands, Farai and his brother Tapiwa faced unimaginable hardships after their parents’ passing. Lack of clothing, food, proper accommodation, and funding for education threatened to derail their future. However, Farai’s unwavering resolve to break the cycle of poverty drove him to succeed.

As teenagers, Farai and Tapiwa worked tirelessly, doing odd jobs to support themselves. Their hard work paid off, enabling them to pursue agricultural training at Mlezu College. Farai’s experiences fueled his desire to help others, and in 2010, he and his wife, Thokozani, founded the Organisation for Orphans Support in Education Needs and Talents (OOSENT).

OOSENT’s mission is to provide education, basic needs, and talent development support to orphans. Since its inception, the organization has transformed the lives of 246 children aged 5-18. Farai’s dedication has ensured these vulnerable children receive tuition, uniforms, counseling, and stationery.

Menstrual health hygiene programs have empowered 114 girls, while sporting programs have helped curb substance abuse. Farai’s compassion extends to children living with HIV and disabilities, providing counseling and psycho-social support. Caregivers have benefited from training in income-generating projects.

Recently, OOSENT received its first grant from Bantwana Zimbabwe, marking a significant milestone. This funding will enable the organization to expand its reach to other wards and districts. Sustainable income-generating projects, including goat farming, small livestock, and nutritional gardens, will be introduced.

Climate education and inclusivity are integral to OOSENT’s vision. Farai strives to create an environment where individuals with disabilities are fully integrated, participating actively rather than merely benefiting.

Farai invites others to join OOSENT’s transformative journey: “Together, we can harness the power of community, foster sustainable livelihoods, and create a future where every individual has the opportunity to thrive.”

Gweru District Development Coordinator Tarisai Mudadigwa praised OOSENT’s community-driven approach: “This initiative has brilliant ideas and now has funding and expertise. We’re optimistic about its success.”

As OOSENT continues to flourish, Farai’s inspiring story serves as a reminder that anyone can rise above adversity and make a meaningful difference.

A Brighter Future Ahead

With unwavering dedication and community support, Farai Lunga’s vision for a brighter future is becoming a reality. OOSENT’s impact will resonate for generations to come, empowering vulnerable children to break free from poverty’s grasp and forge their own paths to prosperity.
