In a dramatic turn of events, Gweru businessman Peter Dube attempted to feign mental illness to escape trial on Monday when he appeared before Senior Judge Justice Munamato Mutevedzi of the Bulawayo High Court.
Dube, accused of double murder and two attempted murder charges, put on a bizarre show, hallucinating and trying to remove his garments while claiming to converse with a Zimbabwe Revenue Authority official.
However, his antics didn’t fool the judge, who promptly ordered Dube to undergo mental examination by two government medical doctors. This isn’t an isolated incident, as several prisoners awaiting trial have been known to fake mental problems to secure acquittals, avoid trials, or escape mounting a defense.

But why do prisoners resort to this tactic? The law in Zimbabwe allows for acquittal if the accused was mentally challenged at the time of the offense. Others may try to avoid trial or defense, while some may use it as a coping mechanism for guilt. Whatever the reason, Dube’s failed attempt serves as a reminder that the courts won’t be easily swayed by such tactics.
The use of fake mental illness as a legal tactic has raised concerns about the integrity of the justice system. While some may view it as a clever ploy, others see it as a desperate attempt to evade accountability. In Dube’s case, his actions only served to raise suspicions and prompt further scrutiny.

In the meantime, the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of ensuring the integrity of the justice system. By exposing such tactics and holding individuals accountable, the courts can maintain public trust and ensure that justice is served.
